The area is famous for outstanding natural beauty, flora & fauna, national parks, great walks and mountain scenery with stunning views wherever you care to look.

Pisa airport is only 1 hr 15 mins, Florence 1 hr 30 mins, Lucca 40 mins & the ski resorts at Cutigliano & Abetone, which also offer summer activities such as mountain biking, trekking & treetop adventure park are less than an hour away. Nearer to home, there is an excellent horse trekking centre, lessons given, english spoken, rafting & quadbiking. This area truly has something to offer to everyone!

Benabbio (Bagni di Lucca)


Benabbio is a small village located ten minutes by car from the center of the historic mountain municipality of Bagni di Lucca. It is a typical Tuscan hill top village with a wealth of history to share with its visitors.

The hamlet was a fief of the Lupari family, and Lupo, although a poet, was the most riotous member of the family. Castruccion Castrani besieged him for two months to make him obey, until Lupo Lupari, according to the legend, hid himself and died in a secret tunnel in the castle, but in actual fact he escaped to Bologna as an exile.

Benabbio is home to a Romanesque church, Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta , which dates back to 1338 and contains several notable works of art. One of these items is a beautiful triptych of the 15th century Florentine school. It also contains two 14th century wooden statues and a baptismal stone font dating back to the 16th century. In front of the church there is Oratorio del SS. Sacramento which is also worth a visit.



In the town square there is a grocery store and a post office. Benabbio has an excellent restaurant which serves inexpensive "pranzi di lavoro" (workman's lunches) and sophisticated local fare in the evening. Their dishes are authentic and very good value, not to mention their Tiramisu which is quite arguably among the best in the region. Further up the hill there is also a recommendable pizzeria, Acquolina in Bocca, which serves traditional food as well as pizza to eat in or take away.

The road leading up to Benabbio from La Villa offers panoramic views of many of the other villages scattered on both sides of the Lima river.
